Biography
Aroldo Alves Sobrinho, widely known as Peninha, was born in São Paulo on February 17, 1953. He built a solid career as a singer, musician, and songwriter in Brazilian music, beginning his discography in 1972 with the release of a 7-inch single by the RCA label. Over the years, he cemented his name on the national scene by scoring remarkable hits, such as the famous song "Sonhos", released in 1977 and immortalized on telenovela soundtracks.
His ability as a songwriter earned him great prestige and recognition in the recording industry, including winning three Sharp Music Awards in prominent categories. His works were given voice by heavyweights of MPB and national romantic music, such as Tim Maia, Fábio Júnior, and Caetano Veloso. Iconic songs like "Alma Gêmea" and "Sozinho", the latter consecrated nationally in the voice of Caetano after prior recordings by Sandra de Sá, demonstrated the reach and versatility of his compositions.
Remaining active and productive over the decades, Peninha released albums like "Coladinhos" in 2001 and continued recording his art in special projects, such as the DVD "Peninha - Ensaio" in 2012. Even after facing health issues, such as a transient ischemic attack suffered in 2011 during a performance, his legacy as one of Brazil's great romantic songwriters remains indelible, with a repertoire re-recorded by dozens of artists from different generations.
