Biography

Salvino Petrúcio Mesquita Maia was a prominent Brazilian pianist, composer, singer, actor, and cultural producer born in Fortaleza. He emerged as a leading figure in the musical landscape of Ceará during the 1960s and 1970s, developing his artistry through university spaces, theaters, bars, and television alongside notable contemporaries like Belchior and Fausto Nilo.

Throughout his career, Maia spent extended periods living in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, collaborating with esteemed lyricists and partners such as José Carlos Capinam, Clodo Ferreira, and Climério. One of his most celebrated compositions, "Cebola Cortada," created in partnership with Clodo, became a major success and was recorded by prominent MPB artists, including Milton Nascimento and MPB4. His debut album, "Melhor que mato verde," was released in 1980, marking an important contribution to Brazilian popular music.

Tragically passing away from HIV-related complications in Fortaleza in 1994, Maia left behind a rich artistic legacy, including the posthumously released album "Cantos do Planeta," which he co-authored with his musical and life partner Bigha Maia. He described his signature style as an ethno-fusion that blended ecological themes, global rhythms, and geographic poetry into a unique cultural atlas. His enduring influence remains a cornerstone of the vibrant musical tradition originating from the Northeast of Brazil.
