Biography

Claudemiro José Rodrigues, better known as Picolino da Portela, was an influential Brazilian singer, composer, and instrumentalist born in Rio de Janeiro. A lifelong devotee of the Portela samba school, he joined its famed composers' wing in 1950 and became a vital pillar of the traditional samba movement. Alongside fellow greats like Candeia, he helped establish the legendary Ala dos Impossíveis, known for introducing choreography to Carnival parades, and later formed part of the pioneering traditional samba ensemble Mensageiros do Samba.

Throughout his career, Picolino contributed numerous classic compositions to Brazilian popular music, many of which were famously interpreted by renowned artists such as Eliana Pittman and Elza Soares. In the mid-1960s, he teamed up with Noca da Portela and Colombo to form the successful Trio ABC da Portela, appearing widely on television programs like those hosted by Chacrinha and Flávio Cavalcanti. Their collaborative composition "Portela Querida" secured a notable fifth place in the prominent 1967 Carnival Music Festival held at the Maracanãzinho.

Picolino remained an enduring figure of Madureira's musical heritage until his passing in Rio de Janeiro in 2003. His legacy endures through his timeless sambas and his foundational role in preserving and revitalizing authentic roots samba alongside contemporaries such as Paulinho da Viola and Casquinha.
