Biography

Aurino Quirino Gonçalves, widely known by his stage name Pinduca, is one of the most emblematic figures in Pará's music and a pillar of Northern Brazilian culture. Born in Igarapé-Miri in 1937, the artist received the title "King of Carimbó" for his invaluable contribution to the modernization and diffusion of this genre. Coming from a family with a musical tradition, Pinduca began his professional career in his teens, working as a percussionist and, later, standing out as one of the main orchestra drummers in Belém. In addition to his artistic career, he served in the Military Police of Pará, where he reached the rank of Lieutenant Master of the Music Band.

His musical innovation lies in the creation of the so-called "stylized carimbó." Unlike the traditional "Pau e Corda" style preserved by masters like Mestre Verequete and Mestre Lucindo, Pinduca incorporated elements of Jovem Guarda and Caribbean rhythms from the Guianas and Suriname, introducing electric instruments such as the guitar, double bass, and keyboards. This fusion resulted in hybrid sounds, such as sirimbó, and paved the way for the emergence of lambada, of which Pinduca is considered the phonographic pioneer with his 1976 recording. He frequently cites Luiz Gonzaga as one of his great inspirations in bringing regional music to national success.

Throughout a career spanning over five decades and dozens of released albums, Pinduca transformed carimbó into a product of international reach, receiving a Latin Grammy nomination in 2017 for the album "No Embalo do Pinduca." His legacy was institutionalized in 2025, when his work was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Pará. With his characteristic attire, marked by large tropical hats, he remains the greatest ambassador of Amazonian rhythms, influencing generations of guitarrada and tecnobrega artists.
