Biography
Pingo de Fortaleza, artistic name of João Wanderley Roberto Militão, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, poet, researcher, and musician born in Fortaleza, Ceará. His nickname originated in childhood because he was born prematurely, while the suffix "de Fortaleza" was adopted in 1986 for a poster at the 3rd Missa dos Mártires de Canudos. He began his artistic journey during the early 1980s by performing at student and university movements in Ceará, concurrently working with puppet theater and teaching art education.
Throughout his career, Pingo de Fortaleza has deeply engaged with northeastern folklore, regional history, and traditional manifestations such as the maracatu. In 1988, he released his album "Lendas e Contendas", featuring arrangements by the Bahian group Bendegó, which explored regional legends, indigenous themes, and historical uprisings. He later dedicated efforts to cultural mapping and aesthetic projection of Ceará's maracatu, releasing projects like "Maculelê-Loas Catu Ibyá" in 1991. His artistic footprint expanded internationally in 1997 with a European tour starting in Cologne, Germany, for the International Seminar 100 Anos de Canudos.
His extensive discography includes works such as "Centauros e Canudos", "Cantares", and collaborative efforts like "Mágico Entre Nós" alongside José Mapurunga. Pingo continues to be recognized as an important voice in preserving and modernizing the cultural heritage of northern and northeastern Brazil. His commitment to regional roots connects him to other notable Brazilian cultural researchers and northeastern artists.
