Biography

Severino Lourenço da Silva Pinto, widely known as Pinto do Monteiro, was born in Carnaubinha, in the municipality of Monteiro, on November 21, 1895. Before establishing himself as one of the greatest exponents of popular poetry and northeastern song poetry, he held various professions, working as a cattle herder, couscous vendor, nursing assistant, guard, and even as a soldier in the fight against cangaço. Learning to read and write only as an adult, he built a striking artistic trajectory that deeply echoed in Brazilian popular culture.

As a legendary repentista and improviser, Pinto do Monteiro traveled across the country dueling with other great names of northeastern song poetry, such as Severino Milanês da Silva, Lourival Batista, and Gato Preto, in addition to engaging in imaginary duels with figures like Patativa do Assaré. His art and verses were immortalized in phonographic records, tapes, and cultural preservation projects by the Fundação Joaquim Nabuco, which eternalized his voice and famous song duels for future generations.

The poet's legacy continued to influence Brazil's music and oral literature long after his death, which occurred on October 28, 1990, in the city of Monteiro. Artists such as Antônio Nóbrega paid tribute to his improvisational genius, cementing his name in the history of northeastern music alongside masters of our culture.
