Biography

Euclides Fortuna, better known as Pitangueira, was born in Itápolis, São Paulo, on October 18, 1928. He formed the renowned sertaneja duo Zé Fortuna & Pitangueira alongside his brother, José Fortuna, in 1947. In the same year, the duo moved to São Paulo, where they began their artistic careers on local radio stations, such as Rádio Record, in 1948. Starting in 1950, Zé Fortuna & Pitangueira consolidated a long and successful trajectory in traditional sertaneja music.

Throughout his career, Pitangueira, along with his brother Zé Fortuna, composed several hits that marked an era in sertaneja music, such as "Paineira Velha", "Lembranças", "Cavalo Branco", "Estêio de Aroeira", "Moça Gorda", "O Selo de Sangue", and "Lenda da Valsa dos Noivos". In addition to the duo, Pitangueira was also part of the trio "Os Maracanãs", which featured his brother Zé Fortuna and accordionists like Coqueirinho and, later, Zé do Fole. The trio "Os Maracanãs" achieved great prominence in radio programs and also performed successfully in theatrical plays, being known as "The Kings of Theater".

Pitangueira passed away in São Paulo on January 11, 2013, at the age of 84. His work, in partnership with his brother Zé Fortuna, left an important legacy for Brazilian sertaneja music, with songs that continue to be remembered and performed by new generations. He is remembered not only as a talented musician and composer, but also as an example of dedication to art and Brazilian popular culture.
