Biography
Premeditando O Breque, also known as Premê, is a Brazilian humor group formed in São Paulo in 1976 by students of the School of Communication and Arts (ECA) of the University of São Paulo. They were part of the underground movement known as Vanguarda Paulistana in the early 1980s. The group is known for its irreverent and humorous lyrics, combined with sophisticated musical arrangements that blend MPB, choro, rock, and even classical music. Their work often features parodies across various genres, incorporating elements of samba, bossa nova, pop, and modern classical idioms.
Throughout their career, Premeditando O Breque has released several notable songs and albums. Some of their most recognized successes include "Garota de Copacabana," a rock rendition of "Pinga com Limão," "Lua-de-Mel em Cubatão," and "Rubens," a song that faced censorship in the 1980s and was later recorded by Cássia Eller. Their debut album, "Premeditando o Breque," released in 1981, gained traction with tracks like "Fim de Semana" and "Marcha da Kombi," which became classics of the Vanguarda Paulista movement. The group's 1983 LP "Quase Lindo" featured the hit "São Paulo, São Paulo."
Premeditando O Breque's music resists conventional labels, functioning as an intellectually driven comedy ensemble. They have been compared to Argentinean group Les Luthiers and the cinematic style of Monty Python. The ensemble's sound is built around instrumental prowess, often under the direction of Mário Manga, one of the founding members. Their unique approach to music and humor has cemented their place in Brazilian music history, influencing subsequent generations of artists.
