Biography

Márcio Vicente Góis, better known as Preto Ghoez, was a prominent leader of the Brazilian Hip-Hop movement, as well as a social and cultural activist. Born in São Luís, Maranhão, on October 8, 1971, Ghoez had a difficult childhood and spent time at FEBEM, experiences that shaped his worldview and drove him to use music as a tool for social transformation. His involvement in Hip-Hop began in 1993, influenced by names like Racionais MC's and the biography of Malcolm X, whom he admired to the point of naming his son after him.

Throughout his career, Preto Ghoez militated in several important organizations of the movement. He was a member of Quilombo Urbano in São Luís for eight years, starting in 1993, and participated in other groups such as Skina and Milícia Neopalmarina. Later, he became the lead vocalist of Clã Nordestino, with which he released the CD "A Peste Negra do Nordeste", earning him the "Hutus Hip Hop Award" in the revelation category, considered one of the largest awards in the genre in Latin America.

In addition to his musical career, Ghoez was a political and social organizer. In partnership with the Ministry of Culture, he conceived the project "Fome de Livro na Quebrada", which aimed to strengthen Hip Hop culture through reading rooms. He was also involved in organizing MHHOB (Organized Hip Hop Movement of Brazil) and militated in Favelafro. His participation in meetings with political figures, such as then-president Lula, sparked controversies, but reaffirmed his importance in the fight against racism and for the organization of black and favela youth.

Preto Ghoez tragically passed away at the age of 32, the victim of a traffic accident in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, on September 10, 2004. His death represented a great loss to the Brazilian Hip Hop movement, but his legacy endures, being honored in grants and awards that celebrate Hip Hop culture in the country.
