Biography
The Quarteto JB was a Brazilian jazz ensemble formed in Vitória, Espírito Santo, in 1982. The group's initial lineup featured Edgar Delgado Rocha (Degas) on saxophone, Afonso Abreu on bass, Carlos Augusto Calmon on piano, and Marco Antônio Grijó on drums and percussion. Over time, the lineup evolved, with "Degas" eventually being replaced by Moacyr de Barros Filho, and later by Antônio Paulo Filho.
The quartet gained recognition for their interpretations of Brazilian popular music classics, often with a jazz and bossa nova influence. In October 1987, they reunited to record their album "Devaneio" at the Sonoviso studio in Rio de Janeiro. This album, which was commercially released in 1995 with support from the Federal University of Espírito Santo and the Fundação Ceciliano Abel de Almeida, featured renditions of songs like "Copacabana," "Violão Vadio," and "Triste," alongside original compositions such as "Coisas do Brasil" and the title track "Devaneio." The album also included a special participation by Dean Weston on flugelhorn and trumpet.
Quarteto JB's work is representative of the instrumental music scene in Brazil, blending sophisticated arrangements with the rich harmonic language of bossa nova and jazz. Their album "Devaneio" is considered a notable contribution to Brazilian jazz, showcasing the quartet's technical proficiency and their ability to bring new life to beloved Brazilian standards.
