Biography

O Quarteto Romançal was a Brazilian musical group formed in Recife, Pernambuco, in 1996. The group stood out for its proposal to blend elements of classical music with essentially Brazilian rhythms and sounds, seeking inspiration in the popular roots of the country's culture, including indigenous and African influences. This approach was considered a deepening and a greater rigor in relation to the proposals of Quinteto Armorial, a previous group led by Antônio Madureira, which aimed to create erudite music based on Northeastern popular elements.

The repertoire of Quarteto Romançal, mostly composed by Antônio Madureira, encompasses waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, repentes, and cantigas, exploring Brazilian sonic diversity. The group performed in several cities across the country in 2005, as part of the Sonora Brasil Project, promoted by Sesc. During the shows, in addition to the music, the group provided explanations about the instruments used and the purpose of each work, with a strong emphasis on Antônio Madureira's guidance.

The trajectory of Quarteto Romançal is intrinsically linked to the Armorial Movement, idealized by Ariano Suassuna, which sought the creation of erudite art from Northeastern popular roots. The group recorded two albums: "Romançal" (1997) and "Tríptico - No Reino da Ave dos Três Punhais" (1999), both released by the Ancestral label. The work of Quarteto Romançal is seen as an important step in the search for an authentic and universal Brazilian musical identity.
