Biography

Founded in Recife in 1994 by singer-songwriter Ortinho (Wharton Coelho), Querosene Jacaré emerged as a significant force in the Brazilian music scene, particularly associated with the mangue beat movement. The band's initial lineup included Ortinho, Sinval, Tonca, and Aiton Gordinho, with a subsequent formation featuring Sinval, Tonca, Adelson Bala, and Alfaia. Their energetic performances and unique blend of regional rhythms with rock and funk quickly garnered attention.

Querosene Jacaré gained wider recognition after performing at the "Festival Abril Pro Rock" in 1996, where they were considered one of the highlights. They also participated in other editions of the festival, as well as the "Festival de Inverno de Garanhuns." In 1997, the band expanded their reach by performing at the Festival de Paredes de Coura in Portugal. Their debut album, "Você não sabe da missa um terço," was released in 1998 by Paradoxx, featuring collaborations with notable artists such as Pupilo from Nação Zumbi and Paulo Rafael.

In 1999, Ortinho departed to pursue a solo career, but the band continued, releasing their second album, "Fique peixe," in 2001. This album was dedicated to their former bassist, Airton Gordinho, who had passed away in 2000. "Fique peixe" showcased a broader range of influences, incorporating elements of samba, soul, funk, Latin music, ciranda, and embolada, while maintaining their core rock and roll sound. Querosene Jacaré's music often reflects a critical and playful engagement with social and cultural themes, characteristic of the creative spirit of Pernambuco's music scene.
