Racionais MC's is a seminal Brazilian hip hop group formed in São Paulo in 1988. Composed of Mano Brown, Ice Blue, Edi Rock, and DJ KL Jay, the group emerged from the periphery of the city, channeling their experiences with social inequality, racism, police brutality, and poverty into their powerful lyrics. Their music is characterized by its raw, direct, and socially conscious message, often described as "gangsta rap" with a strong political and conscious hip-hop influence.
Racionais MC's gained national recognition with their early releases like "Holocausto Urbano" (1990) and "Raio X Brasil" (1993), but it was their 1997 album, "Sobrevivendo no Inferno" (Surviving in Hell), that became a cultural phenomenon, selling over 1.5 million copies independently. This album, featuring iconic tracks such as "Diário de um Detento" and "Capítulo 4, Versículo 3," solidified their status as a voice for the marginalized and a significant force in Brazilian music. Their name is a tribute to Tim Maia's "Racional" albums.
