Biography
Ratos de Porão is one of the most important and influential bands in the history of heavy music in Brazil, standing out as a pioneer of punk rock, hardcore, and crossover thrash. The group was formed in November 1981 in the Vila Piauí district of São Paulo, initially bringing together João Carlos Molina Esteves, known as Jão, bassist Jarbas Alves, known as Jabá, and drummer Betinho Massetti. Over the years, the lineup underwent notable changes, with the iconic entry of João Gordo on vocals and the participation of musicians such as Mingau and Boka, consolidating an aggressive and politicized sound identity.
In the early days, the band took part in the historic festival O Começo do Fim do Mundo in 1982, and released their classic debut album Crucificados pelo Sistema in 1984, considered a landmark of national hardcore. With strong influences from thrash metal and international genres, the group led by Jão and João Gordo migrated to crossover thrash, producing fundamental albums such as Descanse em Paz and Cada Dia Mais Sujo e Agressivo, the latter featuring a collaboration with Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser, members of Sepultura. International projection led the band to sign with foreign record labels and tour Europe and the Americas, expanding the reach of Brazilian heavy rock.
With over four decades on the road, Ratos de Porão maintained its cultural relevance through notable releases, including the record Brasil and the tribute Feijoada Acidente?. The group's trajectory crossed paths with various exponents of the underground and metal scene, sharing stages and ideas with bands like Cólera. Even in the face of aesthetic transformations and controversies with traditional urban tribes, the ensemble remained a definitive symbol of counterculture and musical resistance in the country.
