Biography
Raul Palmieri was a Brazilian guitarist born in Rio de Janeiro on November 11, 1887. He was part of the early Brazilian music scene, contributing to the development of genres like choro and maxixe. Palmieri was a member of the influential group "Os Oito Batutas," led by the renowned Pixinguinha. This ensemble played a crucial role in popularizing Brazilian music both domestically and internationally, notably with their tour in Paris in 1922. Palmieri's musical journey also included participation in the "Grupo de Caxangá," an ensemble with a northeastern inspiration, organized by guitarist João Pernambuco. He left "Os Oito Batutas" in 1921, prior to their famous Parisian excursion.
Palmieri's musical contributions extended beyond his performances. As a guitarist, he was an integral part of the ensembles he joined, helping to shape their sound and repertoire. His involvement with "Os Oito Batutas" placed him alongside other pivotal figures in Brazilian music, such as Donga and China, Pixinguinha's brother. The group's performances at the Cine Palais in Rio de Janeiro were highly successful, showcasing a diverse range of Brazilian rhythms.
Despite his significant involvement in the early 20th-century Brazilian music scene, Raul Palmieri is less remembered today compared to some of his contemporaries. However, his participation in foundational groups like "Os Oito Batutas" and the "Grupo de Caxangá" solidifies his place in the history of Brazilian popular music. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro on April 26, 1968, leaving behind a legacy as a guitarist and a collaborator in the rich tapestry of Brazilian musical heritage.
