Biography
Raul Roulien, born Raul Salvador Intini Pepe in Rio de Janeiro, began his artistic journey as a child, standing out as a child vaudeville star and gaining notoriety in Buenos Aires as a performer of tangos and sambas. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, he established himself as a successful singer by recording several 78 rpm records, in addition to leading theatrical revue companies that endeared him to the Brazilian public.
His international projection led him to Hollywood, where he became one of the first and most sought-after Brazilian actors in American cinema, acting in prominent productions alongside major names of the era. After the conclusion of his North American phase, he returned to Brazil and dedicated himself to film and theatrical direction, leading companies that revealed fundamental talents for the national dramatic scene, such as Cacilda Becker, and directing pioneering films that marked Brazilian cinematography.
Throughout his long career, Roulien also had a strong presence in television, directing teleplays on TV Cultura and keeping alive the dream of major epic productions about the country's historical figures. A contemporary of several exponents of Brazilian culture and music such as Francisco Alves and Vicente Celestino, he left behind a diverse body of work that encompassed popular song, revue theater, and audiovisual direction.
