Biography

Raul Seixas (1945–1989), born in Salvador, Bahia, was a pioneering singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer widely celebrated as the "Father of Brazilian Rock." Emerging in the 1960s with his early group Os Panteras and later working as an influential producer for CBS, Seixas fused traditional Brazilian rhythms like baião with American rock and roll. His mystical, countercultural lyrics—often co-written with figures like Paulo Coelho—and anthems such as "Metamorfose Ambulante" and "Gita" cemented his status as a legendary figure in Brazilian music.

Throughout his career, Seixas navigated both massive commercial success and personal struggles with health and alcoholism. Albums like Krig-ha, Bandolo! and A Panela do Diabo, the latter recorded with fellow Bahian rocker Marcelo Nova, showcased his enduring artistic relevance and rebellious spirit. Despite facing government censorship during Brazil's military dictatorship and turbulent personal periods, his subversive vision and profound connection to fans left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural landscape.

Decades after his untimely death in 1989 due to acute pancreatitis, Seixas remains one of Brazil's most cult-followed artists. His vast discography and posthumous releases continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans. In 2008, Rolling Stone Brazil ranked him among the greatest artists in Brazilian music history, cementing his legacy alongside icons like Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso.
