Biography

O Rebanhão is a Brazilian Christian rock band formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1979. It is considered a pioneer in popularizing rock and pop within the Christian musical niche in Brazil, presenting an innovative sound for the time. Their music addresses religious themes with elaborate lyrics that frequently satirized corruption and social reality, contrasting it with the message of faith.

The band was founded by Janires Magalhães Manso, who, after converting to Protestantism, conceived a rock group with Christian messages. The initial lineup featured musicians from the Presbyterian Church of Copacabana, including Pedro Braconnot, Paulo Marotta, Kandell Rocha, Zé Alberto, and Carlinhos Felix. Throughout its history, O Rebanhão went through several lineups, but maintained a sound that blended progressive rock, art rock, and pop rock, with influences from Tropicália and Clube da Esquina.

O Rebanhão left its mark on the history of Brazilian gospel music, becoming the first evangelical band to sign with multinational record labels such as PolyGram and Warner, and to sell out large professional venues like Canecão. Their modern attitude and contemporary language broke paradigms, contributing to the formation of a new identity in evangelical music in Brazil. After a hiatus, the band returned in 2014 with some of its classic members.
