Biography
Reginaldo "Rossi" Rodrigues dos Santos was born in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, on February 14, 1943. Before establishing himself in music, he studied civil engineering and even taught physics and mathematics, adopting a stage name that incorporated his grandmother's last name. He began his artistic career in 1964 by leading the rock group The Silver Jets and joining the Jovem Guarda movement, a phase during which he opened shows for Roberto Carlos and recorded albums such as O Pão and O Quente.
In the 1970s, the artist moved away from rock to transition into the romantic-brega genre with the album À Procura de Você. He achieved national recognition upon releasing massive hits like Mon Amour, Meu Bem, Ma Femme and, later, the iconic song Garçom, which sold millions of copies and turned him into a cultural phenomenon in the country. Popularly known as the "King of Brega", Rossi came to be seen as a cult icon in the late 1990s, collaborating with various artists and recording top-selling commemorative albums, such as The King, which featured guest appearances by Wanderléa and Erasmo Carlos.
Throughout his career, Reginaldo Rossi accumulated dozens of gold, platinum, and diamond records, in addition to receiving official recognition as the patron of brega. He passed away in Recife on December 20, 2013, due to multiple organ failure caused by lung cancer. His work remains one of the fundamental pillars of Brazil's popular romantic music.
