Casimiro de Nascimento Martins, widely known as Rei Zulu, was born on June 9, 1947, in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. He is a legendary figure in Brazilian vale tudo and mixed martial arts (MMA) history, renowned for his "tarracá" fighting style, a traditional martial art from Maranhão. Zulu gained fame for his extensive career, which reportedly included hundreds of fights and a remarkable undefeated streak for many years. His imposing physique and intimidating presence in the ring, often accompanied by facial expressions and war cries, made him a captivating performer.

Rei Zulu's career is marked by his willingness to challenge fighters across Brazil and internationally. He famously issued a challenge to the Gracie family, leading to a historic televised bout against Rickson Gracie in 1980. Although he lost this fight and a subsequent rematch, the encounter solidified his status as a formidable competitor. Beyond his confrontations with the Gracies, Zulu faced numerous other notable fighters, contributing to the rich tapestry of early Brazilian MMA.

Beyond his fighting career, Rei Zulu is also recognized as the father of MMA fighter Zuluzinho.
