Biography

Renato e Seu Sexteto, later known as Renato e Seu Conjunto, was an influential Brazilian musical group formed in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1959. Led by drummer Renato Maciel de Sá Jr., the ensemble stood out in the musical scene of Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil for its versatility and instrumental quality. Despite being named a sextet, the group frequently had seven or more members, which led writer Luis Fernando Verissimo, who was also part of the band in his youth, to call it "The Largest Sextet in the World."

Throughout its history, Renato e Seu Sexteto featured renowned musicians and figures who would become prominent in other areas, such as the aforementioned Luis Fernando Verissimo, who played saxophone and clarinet before establishing himself in literature. The band participated in important festivals and events, including winning the "Best Musical Ensemble of the State" award in 1966, with singer Elis Regina as its godmother. The group's repertoire spanned various styles, consolidating it as a prominent "melodic ensemble" of the time.

Although the group did not leave an extensive legacy of recordings, its historical importance is undeniable, especially in the musical scene of Rio Grande do Sul. The ensemble officially ended its activities in 1974, but left a significant mark, being remembered for its contribution to Brazilian instrumental music and for having revealed talents such as Luis Fernando Verissimo. In 1983, a posthumous LP titled "Lembra?" was released, capturing some of their performances.
