Biography

Clementino Rodrigues, globally known as Riachão, was a Brazilian samba musician, composer, and actor, born in Salvador, Bahia, on November 14, 1921. Considered one of the most important names in Bahian samba, Riachão built a vast and rich body of work, portraying the daily life of Salvador with a unique and irreverent perspective. His musical career began early, at the age of nine, singing at parties, and by twelve he was already composing his first songs. Throughout his life, he worked in various professions, such as a tailor, bank messenger, and hot dog vendor, experiences that shaped his worldview and influenced his compositions.

Riachão became known as a "musical chronicler" for his ability to transform everyday events in the Bahian capital into sambas that spanned generations. Songs like "Cada Macaco no seu Galho" and "Vá Morar com o Diabo" became classics and were recorded by major names in Brazilian music, such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Cássia Eller. His work also served as the soundtrack for historic moments, such as the return of Caetano and Gil from exile, when "Cada Macaco no seu Galho" was chosen to celebrate that occasion.

In addition to his musical career, Riachão also worked as an actor in films like "A Grande Feira" and participated in television series. His importance to Brazilian culture has been recognized in documentaries and tributes, and he is frequently cited alongside other masters of samba, such as Batatinha, Panela, Ederaldo Gentil, and Nelson Rufino. Riachão passed away on March 30, 2020, at the age of 98, in Salvador, leaving an immortal legacy in Brazilian popular music.
