Biography

Ricardo Cravo Albin is a prominent Brazilian lawyer, journalist, historian, critic, radio broadcaster, and musicologist, widely recognized as one of the greatest researchers of Brazilian Popular Music. Throughout his career, he has led important cultural initiatives, having founded and directed the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in Rio de Janeiro between 1965 and 1971, in addition to presiding over the National Cinema Institute and serving as general director of Embrafilme.

His most remarkable contribution to national culture is the renowned Cravo Albin Dictionary of Brazilian Popular Music, a fundamental work that brings together around seven thousand entries and serves as an unquestionable reference for scholars in the field. He also created the Cravo Albin Cultural Institute, founded in 2001 in Rio de Janeiro with the objective of preserving, promoting, and defending the historical and artistic heritage of Brazilian music.

In addition to his institutional and academic work, Cravo Albin is the author of a vast bibliography and thousands of radio programs for Rádio MEC. His dedication to research has spanned several generations and artistic manifestations, connecting with the work of essential figures such as Chiquinha Gonzaga and Paulinho da Viola, and documenting the memory of icons of our culture.
