Biography

Roberto Zenóbio Affonso de Carvalho was born in Rio de Janeiro on November 16, 1952. Trained in classical piano at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music, he had early contact with art and developed a versatile talent that moved between erudite music, bossa nova, and international rock from groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

His artistic path changed radically in the 1970s when he joined Ney Matogrosso's backing band as a guitarist. It was during this time that he met singer Rita Lee, with whom he began one of the most remarkable and successful partnerships in Brazilian music. Together, they composed dozens of definitive classics of national pop-rock, such as "Lança Perfume", "Mania de Você", and "Saúde", consolidating a sophisticated pop aesthetic of enormous commercial peak.

In addition to his joint work alongside Rita Lee, Roberto also collaborated with other major names in national culture, such as Jorge Mautner and Arnaldo Antunes, and released solo works. His contribution as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and composer shaped the sound of several generations, leaving an indelible legacy in the country's musical history.
