Biography

Roberto Leal, stage name of António Joaquim Fernandes, was born in Portugal and moved to Brazil during his childhood, settling in São Paulo. He became one of the greatest exponents of Portuguese culture in Brazilian territory, building a career of over 45 years marked by major hits, dozens of gold and platinum records, and millions of copies sold. His popular consecration came in the 1970s, driven by appearances on variety shows like that of the legendary Chacrinha and by unforgettable hits like "Arrebita".

In addition to his romantic and folkloric repertoire, which mixed Lusitanian rhythms with typically Brazilian sounds like forró and samba, Leal recorded albums in Mirandese and collaborated with several icons of national music. Throughout his trajectory, he shared microphones and stages with big names of MPB and samba, including artists like Jair Rodrigues, Alcione, Jorge Aragão, and Arlindo Cruz. His ability to move between different musical genres consolidated his artistic prestige on both sides of the Atlantic.

The singer passed away in September 2019, in São Paulo, victim of malignant melanoma, leaving a lasting legacy in popular music. His work continues to be remembered for the unique fusion between the tradition of his homeland and the richness of Brazilian musical culture, immortalized in hundreds of recorded songs and in his role as a cultural ambassador.
