Biography

Romero Magalhães Lubambo is a renowned Brazilian classical and jazz guitarist, arranger, and composer. Born in Rio de Janeiro on July 20, 1955, he initially began his musical journey learning classical piano at a very young age before transitioning to classical guitar at the age of 13 under the guidance of the Escola de Música Villa-Lobos. Although he earned a degree in engineering from PUC-Rio in 1980, his true calling remained in music, leading him to relocate to the United States in 1985 to further develop his international career.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lubambo has established himself as a prominent figure in contemporary jazz and Brazilian instrumental music. He is notably a member of the acclaimed ensemble Trio da Paz and has collaborated extensively with a vast array of legendary musicians, including Ivan Lins, Luciana Souza, Leny Andrade, and César Camargo Mariano. His artistry bridges traditional Brazilian rhythms with sophisticated jazz harmonies, earning him widespread critical acclaim alongside international icons.

In 2017, Lubambo achieved a major milestone when the album Dos Navegantes, created in collaboration with Edu Lobo and Mauro Senise, won the Latin Grammy Award for Best MPB Album. His virtuosic technique and deep musicality continue to influence generations of guitarists and elevate the global profile of Brazilian music.
