Biography
Romildo Souza Bastos, artistically known as Romildo, was a renowned Brazilian composer and singer, born in Recife, Pernambuco, on December 27, 1941. His work, deeply rooted in samba, established him as one of the favorites of the iconic singer Clara Nunes, who immortalized several of his hits, such as "Conto de Areia" and "Deusa dos Orixás", both the result of partnerships with Toninho Nascimento. Romildo also had his compositions recorded by other great names in Brazilian popular music, including Elza Soares, Elizete Cardoso and Roberto Ribeiro.
The artist had a strong connection to the world of carnival, having joined the Composers' Wing of Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel and, later, that of Portela. His artistic trajectory was marked by the quality of his lyrics and melodies, which won over the public and critics alike. In 1990, a documentary entitled "Cheio de Cantigas" was produced to celebrate his life and work, directed by Valter Filé, highlighting the importance of his legacy.
Romildo passed away prematurely in Rio de Janeiro, on May 14, 1990, the victim of a heart attack. Despite his departure, his music remains alive, echoing in recordings, tributes and in the affective memory of everyone who appreciates the richness of Brazilian samba. His work is a testament to his talent and his invaluable contribution to MPB, solidifying his place among the genre's great composers.
