Biography

Ronaldo Pires Monteiro de Souza is a Brazilian composer born in Rio de Janeiro. A self-taught musician on both the piano and the acoustic guitar, he initially pursued studies in engineering before establishing himself in the country's musical landscape. During his formative years, he became an active participant in the influential Movimento Artístico Universitário (MAU), rubbing shoulders with a generation of notable creators that included Ivan Lins, Gonzaguinha, Aldir Blanc, and Ruy Maurity.

Throughout the 1970s, Ronaldo rose to prominence as a skilled songwriter, notably crafting numerous major hits in close partnership with Ivan Lins. Among their most celebrated joint compositions are "Madalena", "Agora", "Me deixa em paz", "Quero de volta o meu pandeiro", and "O amor é o meu país". His melodic and lyrical sensibility helped define a significant era of Brazilian popular music and earned him widespread recognition among peers and critics alike.

The enduring quality of his catalog led to his compositions being recorded by a wide array of prominent MPB interpreters. Artists such as Nélson Gonçalves, Cauby Peixoto, Leny Andrade, Simone, Alcione, and Nana Caymmi all lent their voices to his work, cementing his legacy as an essential contributor to Brazil's rich musical heritage.
