Biography

Rudi Berger is an Austrian-born violinist and composer who has established a significant presence in Brazilian instrumental music. Born in Vienna, he began his musical journey studying classical violin at the Prayner Conservatory and later at the Vienna Conservatory, before expanding into jazz improvisation, piano, blues, and electric guitar during his youth. After releasing his debut album First Step in 1985 and spending time in New York City where he collaborated with various international artists, Berger increasingly incorporated Brazilian influences into his signature style.

His deep connection with Brazil began to solidify through collaborations with renowned Brazilian musicians like Toninho Horta during his time in New York. Between 1996 and 2003, he traveled extensively between the United States, Austria, and Brazil, eventually taking on a guest professorship at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte. This academic and cultural immersion allowed him to deeply explore the intersections of jazz and Brazilian musical traditions, resulting in critically acclaimed works such as the album Postcard From Brazil.

In 2003, Berger permanently relocated to Brazil, seamlessly integrating himself into the country's vibrant instrumental music scene. His artistic output bridges European classical training, American jazz improvisation, and the rich harmonic language of Brazilian music. Alongside his solo projects, he remains an influential figure in contemporary Brazilian instrumental music, often associated with the artistic community of Minas Gerais.
