Biography

Rui Motta was a highly influential Brazilian drummer, composer, and arranger, born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, on July 15, 1951. He began his musical journey at the age of 13, and by 15, he was already performing professionally in various settings, including dances, radio, and television shows with his early bands. Motta was a key figure in the nascent Brazilian rock scene of the 1960s, participating in festivals and concerts with groups like Veludo Elétrico and Sociedade Anônima.

His career took a significant turn in 1973 when he joined Os Mutantes, a legendary band that had already passed through its Tropicalist phase. During his time with Os Mutantes, Motta's talent was recognized when he was twice voted "Drummer of the Year" by Rock magazine. Beyond his work with Os Mutantes, he collaborated with a diverse range of prominent Brazilian artists, including Ney Matogrosso, Zé Ramalho, Sá e Guarabyra, Moraes Moreira, Erasmo Carlos, and Marina. He also contributed to the album "Till We Have Faces" by English guitarist Steve Hackett.

Motta's contributions extended beyond performance; he was also a respected music educator and author. He released seven books on drumming and rhythm, including "Bateria em todos os níveis" and "Manual do Baterista." In 1997, a signature drumstick model, the "1002 Rui Motta," was released by C. Ibañez. In 2006, he founded the "Oficina de Bateria Rui Motta" in Rio de Janeiro, an institution dedicated to training drummers with his unique methodology. Rui Motta passed away on January 17, 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy in Brazilian music.
