Biography
Ruy Barata was a prominent Brazilian poet, politician, lawyer, professor, and lyricist, born in Santarém, Pará. Throughout his life, he combined a deep passion for literature with active political engagement, championing human rights, social justice, and progressive causes. As a writer, he published notable poetry books such as Anjo dos Abismos and A Linha Imaginária, establishing himself as a vital voice in Amazonian literature.
In addition to his literary and political career, Barata made a lasting impact on Brazilian music through his partnership with his son, composer Paulo André Barata. Together, they crafted numerous memorable songs that captured the poetic essence and cultural richness of the Amazon region. His lyrical contributions placed him alongside esteemed figures of Brazilian artistic expression, deeply influencing regional and national culture.
His later years were marked by both political persecution during the military dictatorship and eventual reinstatement to his academic career at the Federal University of Pará. Ruy Barata passed away in São Paulo, leaving behind a rich legacy of poetry, political resistance, and timeless musical compositions created alongside artists like Waldemar Henrique.
