Biography

Ruy Faria was born in Cambuci, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in 1937, and solidified his trajectory in Brazilian popular music as one of the founders and members of the renowned group MPB4. Before joining the famous vocal quartet, he accumulated professional experience as a crooner in establishments around Rio de Janeiro and even worked at Banespa, a job he left to dedicate himself to the Popular Culture Centers alongside companions like Miltinho, Magro, and Aquiles. Recognized for his striking first voice in the group's arrangements, he remained in the lineup for four decades, between 1964 and 2004, when he stepped down following disagreements over business management.

In addition to his striking work in MPB4, Ruy Faria developed highly relevant artistic partnerships, especially with his wife Cynara, a member of the famous Quarteto em Cy, with whom he shared critically acclaimed albums and projects. The musician also established partnerships with fundamental names in national culture, such as Chico Buarque and Ruy Guerra, even directing the staging of the play Calabar. Alongside his intense artistic activity, he completed his studies at the Federal Fluminense University and obtained his registration with the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) to practice law in Rio de Janeiro.

In the years following his departure from the vocal group, he released acclaimed works, such as the album Só pra Chatear, recorded in 2005 in collaboration with Carlinhos Vergueiro. His musical heritage was also perpetuated through his children, João Faria and Francisco Faria, who pursued prominent artistic careers in Brazilian music. Ruy Faria passed away in Rio de Janeiro in January 2018, a victim of complications caused by pneumonia, leaving an indelible legacy in the history of vocal harmony and the country's popular music.
