Biography
Sebastião Oliveira da Paz, known as Sabá, was a renowned Brazilian double bass player, musician, and composer, born in Belém do Pará in 1927. His musical career spanned decades, highlighted by his contribution to bossa nova and Brazilian instrumental music. Sabá began his musical journey in the 1950s, playing with important names of the São Paulo music scene, such as Johnny Alf. His skill on the double bass and his deep musical knowledge made him a sought-after and respected figure among his peers.
In the 1960s, Sabá founded Jongo Trio, an instrumental group that quickly gained notoriety with hits like "Menino das Laranjas". The trio consolidated itself by accompanying Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues on the television show "O Fino da Bossa", resulting in live recordings that achieved great success. Later, Sabá formed Som Três, with Cesar Camargo Mariano, which also gained great repercussion, accompanying artists like Wilson Simonal in shows and recordings. His versatility and talent led him to collaborate with several other musicians, including Dick Farney.
In addition to his career as an instrumentalist, Sabá also worked as a host on radio stations like Jovem Pan, hosting programs such as "Fino da Bossa" and "Show da Manhã". His deep memory and knowledge about the music scene, especially bossa nova in São Paulo, made him an invaluable source for researchers and historians of Brazilian music. Sabá passed away in São Paulo on February 23, 2010, at the age of 83, leaving a significant legacy for Brazilian popular music.
