Biography

José Salgado Santos, known professionally as Salgado Maranhão, is a prominent Brazilian poet and lyricist born in Caxias, Maranhão. Raised primarily by his mother after his parents separated, he experienced a late introduction to formal literacy at the age of fifteen. His early exposure to poetry came from traditional troubadours and guitar circles in his hometown, deeply influencing his artistic path.

Before settling permanently in Rio de Janeiro in 1973, he lived in Teresina, Piauí, where he met the iconic tropicalist poet Torquato Neto, who gave him his artistic baptism name. Over the decades, Salgado Maranhão built a remarkable literary career, winning prestigious honors such as the Jabuti Prize for his books Mural de Ventos and Ópera de Nãos, as well as the Brazilian Academy of Letters poetry prize for A Cor da palavra. He has also been elected to the Academia Maranhense de Letras.

As a lyricist, his songs have been recorded by renowned MPB artists including Paulinho da Viola, Elba Ramalho, Ney Matogrosso, Amelinha, Zizi Possi, and Ivan Lins. His written work has achieved international recognition, being translated into several languages and studied as academic material in numerous universities abroad, establishing him as a vital voice in modern Brazilian literature.
