Biography
Salvador Sobral is a Portuguese singer and musician born in Lisbon in 1989, widely recognized for his profound sensitivity and unique vocal style deeply rooted in jazz and modern music. He first gained public attention as a finalist on the television singing competition Ídolos in 2009, an experience that eventually led him to study at the prestigious Taller de Músics in Barcelona. His artistic path took a historic turn when he won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2017 with the song "Amar pelos Dois", written by his sister Luísa Sobral, achieving the highest score in the competition's history and bringing the trophy to Portugal for the first time.
Beyond his Eurovision triumph, Sobral has built a solid career bridging European jazz influences with subtle nods to traditional songbooks and genres like bossa nova, emphasizing emotional delivery over superficial spectacle. His debut album, Excuse Me, topped the Portuguese charts following his international success, establishing him as a prominent voice in contemporary Iberian music. He has frequently collaborated with various international and regional musicians, performing across Europe and earning honors such as being made a Commander of the Order of Merit in Portugal.
Despite facing severe health challenges, including a successful heart transplant in late 2017, Sobral has continued to record and tour actively, maintaining a reputation as an uncompromising and irreverent artist dedicated entirely to his craft. His work resonates with fans of expressive, acoustic-driven music, drawing comparisons to classic interpreters and modern jazz vocalists alike. Through his distinct artistry, he remains a central figure in contemporary Portuguese music while sharing deep artistic affinities with Brazilian musical traditions such as bossa nova.
