Biography

Samuel Kerr was a highly respected Brazilian maestro, arranger, organist, researcher, and choral conductor, widely recognized for his significant contributions to Brazilian choral music. Born in São Paulo on May 5, 1935, Kerr's musical journey began in his childhood, immersed in the choir of the Presbyterian Church where his parents sang.

He started formal piano studies at age 13 and later became an organist for the church. Kerr pursued higher education in Composition and Conducting at the Faculty of Music and Artistic Education of the Musical Institute of São Paulo, graduating in 1978, and later obtained a Master's degree from UNESP in 2000. His career was marked by his pioneering work in establishing the Music Department at UNESP and his crucial role in creating the UNESP Choir.

Kerr's influence extended across various institutions, including multiple tenures as conductor of the Coral Paulistano at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, and as a professor at UNESP. He was known for revitalizing choral music, experimenting with new expressive resources in repertoire and vocal techniques. His arrangements, particularly for evangelical choirs, and his innovative adaptations of popular Brazilian music for choral performance, solidified his legacy as one of Brazil's most influential choral arrangers. Samuel Kerr passed away on May 17, 2023, at the age of 88.
