Biography
Samuel Rosa de Alvarenga is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Minas Gerais, widely known as the leader and vocalist of the band Skank. Born in Belo Horizonte, Samuel grew up in a musical environment influenced by his father's taste for artists from Clube da Esquina and Tropicália. He began his career in music in the 1980s with the reggae band Pouso Alto, before founding Skank in 1991, a group that would become one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian pop-rock, mixing elements of Jamaican dancehall with the national sound.
Throughout his career, Samuel Rosa established fundamental partnerships with songwriters such as Chico Amaral and Nando Reis, creating anthems that marked generations. In addition to commercial success with Skank, the musician has always maintained a strong connection with the scene in Minas Gerais, even recording a collaborative album with Lô Borges, one of his major references. His solo discography includes soundtracks for Grupo Corpo and the album 'Rosa', released in 2024 after his original band concluded its activities.
Recognized for his melodic skill and the fusion of styles, Samuel has collaborated with a wide range of Brazilian artists, from legends like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso to names from the new generation like Duda Beat and the band Terno Rei. A Psychology graduate, the musician is also a fervent supporter of Cruzeiro and continues to be a central figure in maintaining the identity of contemporary Brazilian rock.
