Sandra Coutinho is a prominent figure in Brazilian music, particularly recognized for her contributions to the post-punk and avant-garde rock scenes of the 1980s. She is a founding member, bassist, singer, and artistic director of the iconic all-female band As Mercenárias, which emerged from São Paulo and became a leading voice in the Brazilian alternative music landscape.

Coutinho's musical journey began in the early 1980s, and she quickly established herself as a skilled bassist and composer. Her work with As Mercenárias, including the critically acclaimed album "Trashland" (1988), explored experimental soundscapes, electronic elements, and raw, energetic performances. She was recognized for her talent, being elected the best Brazilian bass player of the year by Revista Bizz critics in 1988. Beyond As Mercenárias, she has also been involved with other notable bands like Smack and Akt, and has pursued solo projects and collaborations, showcasing her versatility.
