Biography

Sandrino Santoro was an Italian-born Brazilian double bassist, composer, and educator, widely recognized as one of the most important figures in Brazilian classical music.

Born in Acquappesa, Calabria, Italy, in 1938, Santoro immigrated to Brazil with his father in 1951, settling in Rio de Janeiro. He began his musical studies at the age of 17, quickly demonstrating a profound talent for the double bass. His dedication and skill led him to a distinguished career, including securing positions as the principal double bassist for both the National Symphony Orchestra of Rádio MEC and the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro.

Santoro's influence extended beyond his performance career into pedagogy. He taught generations of Brazilian musicians, including his twin sons, Ricardo and Paulo Santoro, who formed the acclaimed Duo Santoro. His legacy is cemented not only through his own virtuosity but also through the artists he inspired and the rich musical tradition he helped to shape in Brazil. He was honored by the UFRJ School of Music for his significant contributions to the instrument and to Brazilian music.

Throughout his career, Santoro collaborated with numerous renowned artists and orchestras, participating in significant tours and recordings.
