Biography

Santuário was a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in São Vicente, São Paulo, in August 1982. The band's initial lineup featured Julio Michaelis Jr. on vocals, Ricardo "Micka" Michaelis and Armando Bandech on guitars, Jorge "Rato" Bastos on bass, and Alessandro Marco on drums. Heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), particularly bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, Santuário quickly gained attention in the local scene for their energetic live performances and epic lyrical themes, which often drew inspiration from medieval times and Greek mythology.

The band's early work was featured on the compilation "S.P. Metal II" in 1985, showcasing their powerful sound and distinctive style. However, Santuário faced internal challenges, including Julio Michaelis Jr.'s health issues, which led to lineup changes and a shift in musical direction. Despite these hurdles, the band continued to perform and record, exploring a sound closer to artists like Yngwie Malmsteen in their later phase.

Although Santuário's active period in the 1980s was relatively short-lived, their legacy has been preserved through re-recordings and compilations released decades later. In 2022, Classic Metal Records released "Santuário – 1982-1987," a comprehensive collection featuring re-recorded tracks from their formative years, allowing new generations to discover the band's contribution to Brazilian heavy metal. The band's influence can be seen in the continued passion for traditional heavy metal within Brazil, a genre they helped to pioneer.
