Biography

Savino De Benedictis was a prominent Italian-Brazilian professor, composer, musicographer, musicologist, and conductor, born in Corato, Italy, on January 20, 1883. He arrived in Brazil at the end of the 19th century, settling in São Paulo, where he built a solid career in the field of music. His work spanned composition, orchestration, and conducting, in addition to an extensive career as a teacher and musical theorist.

As an educator, De Benedictis was one of the pillars of musical education in São Paulo. He taught at several renowned institutions, such as the Dramatic and Musical Conservatory of São Paulo, Saint Benedict College, the Benedetto Marcello Musical Institute (later the Carlos Gomes Musical Conservatory), and the Musical Conservatory of Santos. His influence extended over generations of musicians, many of whom became important figures in the Brazilian music scene, such as Francisco Mignone.

His contribution to Brazilian music was also manifested in his work as a composer and musicologist. He left a legacy of works for orchestra, chamber formations, songs, and piano, some of which have been revived and performed in recent times. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Brazilian Academy of Music in 1945, an institution aimed at promoting Brazilian classical music. Savino De Benedictis passed away in São Paulo on August 15, 1971, leaving an indelible mark on the history of music in Brazil.
