Biography

Seckou Keita is a globally acclaimed Senegalese kora virtuoso, celebrated for his innovative approach and mastery of the 22-stringed West African harp. Born into a lineage of griots and kings, Keita's musical journey began in Ziguinchor, Senegal, where he was a childhood prodigy. He launched his international career in 1996, guided by his uncle Solo Cissokho, performing at festivals across Europe and collaborating with musicians from diverse backgrounds.

Relocating to the United Kingdom in 1999, Keita has since expanded the expressive range of the kora through inventive tunings and virtuosic performances. He has been nicknamed "the Hendrix of the Kora" for his unique style and has earned accolades such as "one of the finest exponents of the kora." Keita's work transcends genres, incorporating elements of jazz, pop, Latin, folk, and classical music, leading to critically acclaimed collaborations with artists like Catrin Finch, Omar Sosa, Damon Albarn, and Baaba Maal.

Keita's contributions extend beyond performance; he has developed new kora tunings, experimented with a double-necked kora, and worked to make the instrument more accessible to new generations. His music, often described as "music for the soul," blends seven centuries of tradition with a modern global flair, earning him numerous awards, including multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and Songlines Music Awards. He continues to push artistic boundaries, recently venturing into orchestral works and opera.
