Biography

Sempre Livre was a pioneering all-female Brazilian pop-rock band formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1984. The band's name, a reference to a popular feminine hygiene brand, was deliberately chosen to be something men would not use, challenging the male-dominated rock scene of the era. Their music blended elements of new wave, pop, and rock, often with a playful and self-aware lyrical style.

Their debut album, "Avião de Combate" (1984), produced by Ruban (who also produced As Frenéticas), achieved significant success, largely driven by the hit single "Eu Sou Free." This song, a collaboration between Ruban and Patrícya Travassos, became an anthem of the 1980s in Brazil. The band's success was noted by the media, with Veja magazine highlighting their unprecedented achievement as a female group in the Brazilian rock landscape, drawing parallels to international acts like The Runaways and Girlschool.

Despite a hiatus after 1986, during which lead singer Dulce Quental pursued a solo career, Sempre Livre reunited in the 1990s, releasing "Vícios de Cidade." The band has continued to perform and release music, including the album "A Boa Moça" in 2016, demonstrating their enduring presence in Brazilian music. They are often cited alongside other influential Brazilian bands of the 1980s, such as Metrô and As Frenéticas.
