Biography
Founded in 1984 in Belo Horizonte by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, Sepultura emerged from the Minas Gerais scene to become the greatest exponent of Brazilian metal in the world. Initially influenced by the extreme metal of bands like Sarcófago (founded by former Sepultura vocalist Wagner Lamounier), the group evolved from a primitive death/black metal sound into technical and aggressive thrash metal, solidifying their classic lineup with the addition of guitarist Andreas Kisser.
In the 1990s, the band reached the peak of their creativity and global fame with the release of seminal albums like 'Arise' and 'Chaos A.D.'. In 1996, with the record 'Roots', Sepultura revolutionized the genre by fusing metal with elements of Brazilian culture, featuring contributions from Carlinhos Brown and the Xavante tribe. This period of glory was interrupted by an internal crisis that resulted in the traumatic departure of Max Cavalera, leading the group to recruit American vocalist Derrick Green.
Even with constant lineup changes, including the departure of Igor Cavalera and the tenure of virtuoso drummers like Eloy Casagrande, the band maintained its relevance. Unusual collaborations, such as the 'Zépultura' project with singer Zé Ramalho, demonstrated the group's versatility. In 2023, after decades on the road and millions of records sold, Sepultura announced their farewell tour, bringing to a close a trajectory that influenced generations of musicians both in and outside of Brazil.
