Biography

Serginho Marques is a Brazilian singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, recognized for his significant contributions to Brazilian popular music (MPB) and for being a pioneer of Axé Music in Belo Horizonte.

Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Marques began his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the guitar at nine and performing in parties and events by thirteen. His career took him to Salvador, Bahia, in the 1980s, where he immersed himself in the vibrant Bahian music scene and collaborated with artists like Tavito. Upon returning to Belo Horizonte, he became a key figure in introducing Bahian music to the region, eventually becoming known as a pioneer of Axé Music in the capital. He was also the vocalist for notable bands such as Lombinho com Cachaça, B. Djala, and Bantuquerê, before embarking on a successful solo career.

Throughout his career, Serginho Marques has released several solo albums, including "Um Pouco Mais de Mim" (2003), which features collaborations with renowned artists like Vander Lee and Chico Amaral. His live performances are celebrated for their energy, vast repertoire spanning various phases of MPB, and his charismatic stage presence. In recent years, Marques has been a prominent figure in the Carnival scene in Belo Horizonte, participating in the Baianas Ozadas bloco. Despite a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2021, which has progressively limited his motor functions, Marques continues to perform and inspire, demonstrating immense resilience and a deep passion for music, often supported by fellow musicians and his dedicated fanbase.
