Biography

Serginho Procopio, born Sérgio Procópio da Silva in Rio de Janeiro on December 5, 1967, is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, cavaquinho player, and carnival director. He comes from a musical lineage, stepping into the esteemed Velha Guarda da Portela following the passing of his father, Osmar do Cavaco. Alongside his solo musical endeavors in samba, he has actively contributed to the samba-enredo community, participating in numerous internal competition rounds for the Portela samba school.

Throughout his career within the carnival circuit, Procopio faced notable challenges, including a controversial defeat in the 2010 internal qualifiers against competitors like Diogo Nogueira. Despite moments of frustration that led him to contemplate stepping away from samba-enredo contests, his dedication to Portela remained steadfast. This deep commitment culminated in his successful 2013 run for the presidency of the Portela samba school, where he won the opposition campaign by a narrow margin of three votes.
