Biography
Francisco Sérgio de Souza Medeiros, known professionally as Sérgio Magrão, is a Brazilian bassist and vocalist born in Rio de Janeiro on October 26, 1950. He is widely recognized for his long-standing role as the bassist for the iconic Brazilian rock band 14 Bis, a position he has held since the group's inception. Magrão's musical journey began earlier, however, when he was part of the influential progressive rock band O Terço. During his time with O Terço, he was a member of its most successful lineup, which included Flávio Venturini.
Magrão's contributions extend beyond his performance as a musician. He is also a credited songwriter, notably co-authoring the hit song "Caçador de Mim" with Luiz Carlos Sá of the duo Sá e Guarabyra. This song became one of 14 Bis's biggest successes and was famously covered by the legendary Milton Nascimento, leading many to mistakenly believe Nascimento was the song's composer. His musicality and songwriting prowess have left a significant mark on Brazilian music.
Throughout his career, Sérgio Magrão has been associated with several key figures and movements in Brazilian music. His work with O Terço and later with 14 Bis places him within the broader context of Brazilian rock and MPB. His collaboration with artists like Flávio Venturini and Sá & Guarabyra, and the enduring popularity of songs like "Caçador de Mim," solidify his status as an important figure in the Brazilian music landscape.
