Biography

Sérgio Pererê, stage name of José Sergio Pereira, was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, on March 12, 1976. A singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, writer, and actor, he has built a solid trajectory in Brazilian music marked by strong influences from Afro-Minas sound and African-rooted manifestations, such as congos and moçambiques. His initial contact with art came from a family environment full of musical references and, in childhood, the practice of capoeira deepened his bond with black culture.

In 1995, Pererê founded the group Tambolelê alongside Santonne Lobato and Geovane Sassá, a project with which he toured internationally and recorded two prominent albums. After leaving the group in 2011, he consolidated a prolific solo career with dozens of releases, engaging in dialogue with artists such as Maurício Tizumba, Lia de Itamaracá, Mônica Salmaso, and Fernanda Takai. Recent albums like "História do Mundo" (2023) and "Canções de Outono" (2024) reinforce his versatility and deep research into ancestral and contemporary sonorities.

In addition to his musical work, Pererê has accumulated prominent work in theater and literature, having performed in shows directed by João das Neves and released the literary work "A Morte de Antônio Preto". His dedication to valuing African heritage is also reflected in his discography, which pays homage to everything from traditional rhythms to Bantu ancestry, reaffirming his fundamental role in the renewal of Brazilian popular music.
