Biography
Sérgio Moraes Sampaio, known artistically as Sérgio Sampaio, was born in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim on April 13, 1947, and passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 15, 1994. A Brazilian singer and songwriter, he stood out in the country's popular music for his elaborate poetry and his ability to move across genres such as samba, bolero, rock, and blues. His artistic career gained greater prominence in the 1970s, marked both by major hits and by conflicts with record labels and self-destructive attitudes, which earned him the label of a cursed artist in MPB.
His career began to take shape after moving to Rio de Janeiro and establishing significant partnerships, highlighted by his friendship with Raul Seixas. Together, they participated in the iconic conceptual album Sociedade da Grã-Ordem Kavernista apresenta Sessão das dez, alongside Miriam Batucada and Edy Star. National recognition came in 1972 with the release of "Eu quero é botar meu bloco na rua", presented at the International Song Festival. The song became a popular phenomenon, boosting the release of his debut solo album in 1973. Despite the track's impact, the record faced commercial difficulties, exacerbated by the artist's aloof temperament and his problems with alcohol consumption.
In the following decades, Sampaio released works such as Tem que acontecer and Sinceramente, in addition to facing periods of ostracism and financial hardship. Despite late recognition and his premature death at age 47 due to pancreatitis, his work was widely reassessed and celebrated posthumously by names such as Zeca Baleiro, who finished his unreleased project Cruel, and Sérgio Natureza. His contribution to Brazilian music remains alive through tributes and the constant rediscovery of his compositions by new generations.
