Biography
Sérgio Augusto Bustamante, better known as Serguei, was a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and one of the most eccentric figures in the history of Brazilian rock. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he spent part of his youth living in Long Island, New York, where he participated in student festivals before returning to Brazil and working various jobs, including as a flight attendant. His unconventional style, flamboyant personality, and energetic performances established him as a true rock and roll pioneer in the country.
Throughout his career, Serguei became famous for his theatrical stage presence, countercultural attitude, and legendary stories, including a purported romance with American rock icon Janis Joplin during a visit to Woodstock in 1969. Although he never achieved massive commercial success and was even mockingly awarded a worst singer trophy early on, his sheer persistence and authenticity turned him into an enduring cult icon. He gained renewed popularity in the 1990s and 2000s following memorable appearances at several editions of the Rock in Rio festival, cementing his status as the grandfather of Brazilian rock.
In his later years, Serguei resided in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, where he maintained the famous "Templo do Rock," a museum dedicated to his life, career, and memorabilia that became a major local tourist attraction. He frequently appeared on television programs, such as Jô Soares' talk show, and continued to perform alongside his backing band, Pandemonium. Serguei passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy defined much more by his rebellious attitude, flamboyant outfits, and pure rock spirit than by traditional chart success.
